Product Description:

Amoxicillin (Axmel) 100mg/ml Powder for Suspension is an oral antibiotic used for the treatment of various bacterial infections. It comes in the form of a powder that, when mixed with water, forms a suspension. The final product is typically provided in a 10ml bottle. This formulation is especially suitable for children or adults who have difficulty swallowing tablets or capsules. Amoxicillin is a broad-spectrum penicillin antibiotic that works by inhibiting bacterial cell wall synthesis, ultimately leading to bacterial cell death.

Indications:

Amoxicillin (Axmel) 100mg/ml Oral Suspension is commonly prescribed for the treatment of the following bacterial infections:

  1. Respiratory tract infections:

    • Pneumonia

    • Bronchitis

    • Sinusitis

    • Tonsillitis

    • Pharyngitis (sore throat)

  2. Ear infections:

    • Otitis media (middle ear infection)

  3. Urinary tract infections (UTIs):

    • Cystitis

    • Pyelonephritis (kidney infection)

  4. Skin and soft tissue infections:

    • Cellulitis

    • Impetigo

    • Abscesses

  5. Gastrointestinal infections:

    • Helicobacter pylori eradication (used in combination with other antibiotics for peptic ulcer disease)

  6. Dental infections:

    • Tooth abscesses

  7. Other infections:

    • Endocarditis prophylaxis (in patients at risk of infective endocarditis)

Dosage and Administration:

The dosage of Amoxicillin (Axmel) 100mg/ml Oral Suspension depends on the patient's age, weight, the infection being treated, and the severity of the infection. The medication should be measured carefully using a proper dosing syringe or spoon.

Adults and Children over 12 years:

  • Mild to moderate infections: 250mg to 500mg every 8 hours (equivalent to 2.5ml to 5ml of suspension every 8 hours).

  • Severe infections: 500mg to 1g every 8 hours (equivalent to 5ml to 10ml of suspension every 8 hours).

Children (based on weight):

  • For respiratory infections, otitis media, or UTIs: The usual pediatric dose is around 20-40mg/kg/day, divided into 3 doses (administered every 8 hours).

    • For example, for a child weighing 10kg, the dose would typically be 10ml to 20ml daily, divided into 3 doses (3.33ml to 6.67ml per dose).

For Helicobacter pylori eradication:

Amoxicillin is typically used in combination with other medications (e.g., clarithromycin and proton pump inhibitors) for 1g twice daily, for a 14-day regimen.

Administration:

  • Shake the bottle well before use.

  • Use the provided measuring device to ensure accurate dosing.

  • Administer the suspension with or without food.

  • Complete the full prescribed course, even if symptoms improve before finishing the medication.

Common side effects of Amoxicillin (Axmel) 100mg/ml Oral Suspension include:

  1. Gastrointestinal effects:

    • Nausea

    • Diarrhea

    • Vomiting

    • Abdominal pain or discomfort

    • Flatulence (gas)

  2. Allergic reactions:

    • Rash (skin rash)

    • Itching

    • Swelling (especially of the face or throat)

    • Anaphylaxis (severe allergic reaction; rare)

  3. Central nervous system:

    • Headache

    • Dizziness

  4. Other side effects:

    • Fever

    • Fatigue

    • Sleep disturbances

Serious Side Effects:

  • Severe allergic reactions: Symptoms include severe rash, difficulty breathing, and swelling of the face, lips, or throat. Seek emergency medical help immediately if these occur.

  • Clostridium difficile-associated diarrhea: Severe, persistent diarrhea that may be accompanied by abdominal cramping. This can occur during or after antibiotic treatment.

  • Liver problems: Symptoms may include yellowing of the skin or eyes (jaundice), dark urine, and unusual fatigue.

  • Blood disorders: Unusual bruising or bleeding, low red blood cell count (anemia), or low platelet count (thrombocytopenia).

  • Severe skin reactions: Rare, but potentially serious skin reactions such as blistering or peeling.

Contraindications:

Amoxicillin (Axmel) 100mg/ml Oral Suspension should be avoided or used with caution in the following conditions:

  1. Hypersensitivity:

    • Allergy to amoxicillin or other penicillin antibiotics (e.g., ampicillin).

    • History of severe allergic reactions (e.g., anaphylaxis, hives, swelling) to penicillins or cephalosporins.

  2. Mononucleosis (Infectious mononucleosis):

    • Amoxicillin can cause a rash in patients with mononucleosis, which is often mistaken for an allergic reaction. It is generally contraindicated in these patients.

  3. Renal impairment:

    • Patients with severe kidney disease may require dose adjustments.

    • Caution is advised when administering amoxicillin in patients with renal insufficiency.

  4. Pregnancy:

    • Amoxicillin is considered safe during pregnancy (Category B). However, it should only be used when absolutely necessary and prescribed by a healthcare provider.

  5. Breastfeeding:

    • Amoxicillin is excreted in breast milk in small amounts. It is generally considered safe during breastfeeding, but a healthcare provider should be consulted before use.

Precautions:

  1. History of Allergic Reactions:

    • Patients with a history of allergic reactions to penicillin or other beta-lactam antibiotics should exercise caution when using Amoxicillin.

  2. Antibiotic-associated diarrhea:

    • C. difficile-associated diarrhea can occur during or after antibiotic treatment, resulting in severe and persistent diarrhea. If this occurs, seek medical attention immediately.

  3. Renal Function:

    • Adjustments may be needed for patients with renal impairment or kidney disease, as the drug is primarily excreted by the kidneys.

  4. Drug Interactions:

    • Probenecid: Can increase the blood levels of amoxicillin by reducing its excretion.

    • Oral contraceptives: There are some reports of decreased effectiveness of oral contraceptives while taking amoxicillin. Additional contraceptive methods may be recommended during treatment.

Summary:

Amoxicillin (Axmel) 100mg/ml Oral Suspension is a broad-spectrum penicillin antibiotic used to treat a wide range of bacterial infections in both adults and children. It is commonly prescribed for respiratory, ear, urinary, and skin infections, as well as for H. pylori eradication in combination with other medications. Side effects may include gastrointestinal issues, allergic reactions, and headaches. It should be avoided in individuals with a known penicillin allergy and used cautiously in those with kidney disease. Always follow the prescribed dosage and complete the entire course of treatment to avoid bacterial resistance.
