Product Description:

Atorvastatin Calcium (Stalip 80) 80mg Film-Coated Tablets is a medication used to manage high cholesterol and to reduce the risk of cardiovascular diseases. Atorvastatin is a member of the statin class of drugs, which work by inhibiting the enzyme HMG-CoA reductase. This enzyme is involved in the production of cholesterol in the liver. By blocking this enzyme, Atorvastatin helps lower the levels of low-density lipoprotein (LDL) cholesterol (often referred to as "bad" cholesterol) and triglycerides, while increasing high-density lipoprotein (HDL) cholesterol ("good" cholesterol).

Each tablet contains 80 mg of Atorvastatin Calcium, and the medication comes in a film-coated tablet form, with 100 tablets per pack. It is generally prescribed to reduce the risk of heart attack, stroke, and other heart-related complications.

Indication:

Atorvastatin Calcium (Stalip 80mg) is primarily indicated for:

  • Hypercholesterolemia (High cholesterol): To lower total cholesterol, LDL cholesterol, and triglycerides in patients with high cholesterol.

  • Prevention of cardiovascular events: In patients at high risk for heart disease, including those with diabetes, hypertension, or a history of heart attack or stroke.

  • Primary prevention: To reduce the risk of developing coronary artery disease (CAD) in patients who have risk factors but no established cardiovascular disease.

  • Secondary prevention: To reduce the risk of further cardiovascular events (such as heart attack or stroke) in patients with existing coronary artery disease.

  • Hypertriglyceridemia: To treat high triglyceride levels in conjunction with dietary changes and other interventions.

Dosage:

The dosage of Atorvastatin Calcium (Stalip 80mg) depends on the individual patient's condition and treatment goals. The typical dosing regimen is as follows:

  • Adults:

    • Initial dose: The usual starting dose for most patients is 10 mg to 20 mg once daily.

    • Maintenance dose: The dose can be gradually increased to achieve the desired cholesterol-lowering effect. For Atorvastatin 80mg, the dose is typically adjusted based on the patient's response, with a recommended range of 10 mg to 80 mg once daily. The 80 mg dose is usually used for patients with very high cholesterol or those at a very high risk of cardiovascular events.

    • Maximum dose: The maximum recommended dose of Atorvastatin is 80 mg per day.

  • Administration: The tablet should be taken once daily, preferably at the same time each day, with or without food. It is recommended to take it in the evening, as the body produces more cholesterol at night.

  • Elderly patients: There is no specific dosage adjustment required for elderly patients, but they should be monitored for potential side effects.

Note: The dosage should be individualized based on cholesterol levels and other risk factors for cardiovascular diseases.

Side Effects:

Common side effects of Atorvastatin Calcium (Stalip 80mg) may include:

  • Headache.

  • Muscle pain, tenderness, or weakness (myopathy).

  • Gastrointestinal issues: nausea, constipation, abdominal pain, or bloating.

  • Fatigue or weakness.

  • Elevated liver enzymes (monitored through blood tests).

Serious but rare side effects may include:

  • Rhabdomyolysis: Severe muscle breakdown that can lead to kidney damage. Symptoms include muscle pain, tenderness, or weakness, especially if accompanied by dark-colored urine.

  • Liver damage: Symptoms may include yellowing of the skin or eyes (jaundice), dark urine, or unusual fatigue.

  • Severe allergic reactions: Symptoms might include swelling of the face, lips, tongue, or throat, or difficulty breathing.

  • Cognitive impairment: Memory loss or confusion in some individuals.

  • Kidney problems: Difficulty urinating or changes in urine output.

If any of these serious side effects occur, medical attention should be sought immediately.

Contraindications:

Atorvastatin Calcium (Stalip 80mg) should not be used in the following situations:

  • Hypersensitivity to Atorvastatin or any component of the product.

  • Active liver disease or unexplained persistent elevations in liver enzymes.

  • Pregnancy: Atorvastatin is contraindicated during pregnancy due to potential harm to the fetus. It is classified as a Category X drug.

  • Breastfeeding: Atorvastatin is also contraindicated during breastfeeding, as it can be excreted in breast milk and may harm a nursing infant.

  • Severe renal impairment: Atorvastatin should be used with caution in patients with severe kidney problems.

  • Concurrent use with strong inhibitors of CYP3A4 (e.g., certain antifungals, antibiotics, or HIV protease inhibitors) should be avoided due to the increased risk of muscle-related side effects (myopathy).

Precautions:

  • Liver disease: Atorvastatin should be used with caution in patients with a history of liver disease or abnormal liver function tests. Liver function tests should be monitored regularly.

  • Muscle disorders: Caution should be exercised in patients with a history of muscle problems, as statins can increase the risk of myopathy or rhabdomyolysis, particularly at higher doses.

  • Alcohol use: Excessive alcohol consumption increases the risk of liver damage, so it should be limited during treatment with Atorvastatin.

  • Elderly patients: Older adults may be more susceptible to the side effects of Atorvastatin, particularly muscle-related issues.

  • Diabetes: Statins, including Atorvastatin, may slightly increase blood sugar levels, so patients with diabetes or at risk for diabetes should be closely monitored.

Pregnancy and breastfeeding:

  • Pregnancy: Atorvastatin should not be used during pregnancy due to potential teratogenic effects.

  • Breastfeeding: Atorvastatin is contraindicated while breastfeeding.
