Indication/Uses: 

1. Respiratory Tract Infections:

   • Community-acquired pneumonia
   • Acute exacerbations of chronic obstructive pulmonary disease (COPD)
   • Acute bacterial otitis media

3. Bone and Joint Infections:

   • Osteomyelitis (bone infection)

4. Skin and Soft Tissue Infections:

Uses:

Ceftriaxone works by inhibiting bacterial cell wall synthesis, leading to cell lysis and death. It is administered either intravenously (IV) or intramuscularly (IM).

• IV Administration: Typically used for more severe infections, where rapid and high concentrations of the drug are required in the bloodstream.
• IM Administration: Used for moderate to severe infections, particularly when IV access is not available or practical.

Dosage:

The dosage of ceftriaxone varies based on the type and severity of the infection, as well as the patient’s age and kidney function. General dosing guidelines include:

• Adults and Children (12 years and older):

  • 1-2 grams once daily or in two equally divided doses depending on the severity of the infection.
  • For severe infections, such as bacterial meningitis, up to 4 grams daily may be used.

• Children (less than 12 years):

  • The dosage is typically 50-75 mg/kg body weight once daily, not exceeding 2 grams per day.
  • For severe infections, such as bacterial meningitis, the dosage can be up to 100 mg/kg body weight once daily.
