Product Description:

Etoricoxib (Saphetor 120mg Film-Coated Tablet 30's) is a nonsteroidal anti-inflammatory drug (NSAID) that belongs to the coxib class of drugs. It works by selectively inhibiting the COX-2 enzyme (cyclooxygenase-2), which plays a key role in the production of prostaglandins—chemicals that mediate inflammation, pain, and fever. By blocking COX-2, Etoricoxib reduces inflammation, pain, and swelling, providing relief for conditions such as arthritis, acute pain, and gout.

Each tablet contains 120 mg of Etoricoxib and comes in a bottle containing 30 film-coated tablets. This formulation ensures that the active ingredient is released slowly and absorbed efficiently, providing effective pain and inflammation relief.

Indications:

Etoricoxib (Saphetor 120mg) is used for the management of:

  • Osteoarthritis: To reduce pain and inflammation associated with osteoarthritis.

  • Rheumatoid arthritis: For managing the symptoms of rheumatoid arthritis.

  • Acute gout: To relieve the pain and inflammation of gout attacks.

  • Acute pain: For short-term treatment of moderate to severe pain, such as postoperative pain, musculoskeletal pain, or dental pain.

  • Chronic musculoskeletal pain: For conditions like lower back pain or other soft tissue inflammatory pain.

  • Ankylosing spondylitis: To treat pain and inflammation in patients with ankylosing spondylitis.

Dosage:

The typical dosage of Etoricoxib (Saphetor 120mg) will vary depending on the condition being treated:

  • For Osteoarthritis:

    • The usual dose is 60 mg once daily.

  • For Rheumatoid Arthritis:

    • The usual dose is 90 mg once daily.

  • For Acute Gout:

    • The typical dose is 120 mg once daily for up to 8 days.

  • For Acute Pain (such as postoperative pain or musculoskeletal pain):

    • The typical starting dose is 90 mg once daily.

  • For Ankylosing Spondylitis:

    • The usual dose is 90 mg once daily.

Maximum Dose:

  • For most conditions, the maximum dose is 120 mg per day.

  • Gout: Treatment should not exceed 8 days at the maximum dose of 120 mg daily.

Administration:

  • Etoricoxib should be taken once daily, with or without food. The tablet should be swallowed whole with water and should not be crushed or chewed.

Side Effects:

Common side effects of Etoricoxib (Saphetor 120mg) include:

  • Headache.

  • Dizziness or lightheadedness.

  • Stomach pain or indigestion.

  • Nausea or diarrhea.

  • Swelling (edema), especially in the ankles and legs.

  • Upper respiratory tract infections.

Serious but less common side effects may include:

  • Gastrointestinal issues: Such as ulcers, gastrointestinal bleeding, or perforation, which can lead to severe abdominal pain, vomiting blood, or black stools.

  • Cardiovascular problems: Increased risk of heart attack, stroke, and other serious heart conditions, particularly with long-term use or in individuals with pre-existing cardiovascular disease.

  • Kidney damage: Symptoms may include decreased urine output, swelling, or fatigue.

  • Liver damage: Symptoms of liver problems include yellowing of the skin or eyes (jaundice), dark urine, and unusual fatigue.

  • Severe allergic reactions: Including swelling of the face, lips, tongue, or throat, or difficulty breathing (anaphylaxis).

  • Hypertension: Increased blood pressure.

If any of these serious side effects occur, medical attention should be sought immediately.

Contraindications:

Etoricoxib (Saphetor 120mg) should not be used in the following conditions:

  • Hypersensitivity: To Etoricoxib or any of the excipients in the formulation.

  • Active gastrointestinal bleeding or ulcers: Due to the risk of gastrointestinal complications like bleeding or perforation.

  • Severe heart disease: Including recent heart attack, heart failure, or ischemic heart disease.

  • Severe liver impairment: Etoricoxib is metabolized by the liver, and its use is contraindicated in patients with severe liver dysfunction.

  • Severe renal impairment: In patients with kidney disease or low kidney function, use should be avoided or done with caution.

  • Pregnancy: Third trimester: Etoricoxib is contraindicated during pregnancy, especially during the third trimester, due to potential harm to the fetus (e.g., premature closure of the ductus arteriosus).

  • Breastfeeding: Etoricoxib is not recommended during breastfeeding, as it may pass into breast milk.

  • History of asthma or hypersensitivity reactions to NSAIDs: Including conditions such as aspirin-exacerbated respiratory disease (AERD), which can cause severe asthma attacks and other respiratory symptoms.

Precautions:

  • Cardiovascular risk: Etoricoxib can increase the risk of heart attack, stroke, and hypertension, particularly with prolonged use or in patients with pre-existing cardiovascular conditions. It should be used with caution in these patients.

  • Gastrointestinal bleeding: Etoricoxib, like other NSAIDs, can cause gastrointestinal bleeding or ulcers, particularly in older adults, and should be used with caution in individuals with a history of gastrointestinal issues.

  • Kidney function: Etoricoxib should be used cautiously in patients with impaired kidney function. Regular monitoring of renal function is recommended.

  • Liver function: Liver function should be monitored during long-term use, especially in patients with liver conditions.

  • Elderly patients: Older adults may be more susceptible to the side effects of Etoricoxib, including gastrointestinal and cardiovascular issues.

  • Hypertension: Use with caution in patients with high blood pressure, as it may worsen hypertension.

Pregnancy and Breastfeeding:

  • Pregnancy: Contraindicated in the third trimester of pregnancy. Use during the first and second trimesters should be done only if the benefits outweigh the risks, and only under the guidance of a healthcare provider.

  • Breastfeeding: Etoricoxib should be avoided during breastfeeding, as there is no sufficient data on its safety in lactating women.

Important Note: Always follow the dosage and instructions provided by your healthcare provider or pharmacist. Overuse or prolonged use of Etoricoxib (Saphetor 120mg) can lead to significant side effects, including gastrointestinal issues, cardiovascular risks, and kidney damage. Regular monitoring of heart health, kidney function, and liver enzymes is recommended during treatment. If you experience any serious side effects, contact your healthcare provider immediately.
