Indication/Uses: 

1. Edema Associated with Congestive Heart Failure

   • Usage: Furosemide is used to reduce edema (fluid buildup) in patients with congestive heart failure. It helps alleviate symptoms such as swelling in the legs and ankles, and difficulty breathing.

2. Edema Associated with Liver Cirrhosis

   • Usage: It is prescribed for patients with liver cirrhosis to manage fluid retention and prevent complications such as ascites (fluid accumulation in the abdomen).

3. Renal Disease-Associated Edema

   • Usage: Furosemide is used to treat edema associated with renal disease, including nephrotic syndrome and chronic renal failure.

4. Acute Pulmonary Edema

   • Usage: In emergency situations, furosemide can be administered to rapidly reduce fluid overload in the lungs, which can be life-threatening.

5. Hypertension

   • Usage: Furosemide is sometimes used as an adjunct treatment for hypertension, especially when other diuretics are not sufficient.

6. Hypercalcemia

   • Usage: It can be used to manage hypercalcemia (high levels of calcium in the blood) by increasing the excretion of calcium.

Mechanism of Action

Furosemide works by inhibiting the sodium-potassium-chloride co-transporter in the thick ascending limb of the loop of Henle in the kidneys. This action prevents the reabsorption of sodium and chloride, leading to increased urine production (diuresis). The increased excretion of water, sodium, chloride, potassium, and calcium helps reduce fluid buildup in the body.
