Indication/Uses:
Type 2 Diabetes Mellitus:
Primary Use: Glimepiride is used to lower blood sugar levels in patients with type 2 diabetes.
Monotherapy: Can be used alone when diet and exercise are insufficient for glycemic control.
Combination Therapy: Often used in combination with other antidiabetic medications, such as metformin or insulin, to achieve better blood sugar control.
Mechanism of Action:
Glimepiride belongs to a class of drugs called sulfonylureas. It works by stimulating the release of insulin from the beta cells of the pancreas. This helps lower blood sugar levels by increasing insulin levels in the blood, which allows the body to use glucose more effectively.
Dosage and Administration:
Dosage:
The typical starting dose is 1-2 mg once daily.
The dose can be adjusted based on the patient’s blood glucose levels, up to a maximum of 8 mg once daily.
Administration:
Glimepiride is usually taken with breakfast or the first main meal of the day.
It should be swallowed whole with water and not chewed or crushed.
