Product Description:

Allopurinol (Urisol) 100mg Antigout Tablet 100's is a medication primarily used to treat gout and hyperuricemia (high levels of uric acid in the blood). Allopurinol works by inhibiting the enzyme xanthine oxidase, which is responsible for the conversion of purines into uric acid. By lowering uric acid levels in the body, Allopurinol helps prevent gout attacks and the formation of urate crystals, which can cause joint pain and damage.

Each tablet contains 100 mg of Allopurinol, and it is available in bottles containing 100 tablets. It is typically taken once daily or as directed by a healthcare provider.

Indication:

Allopurinol (Urisol) 100mg Tablets are primarily indicated for:

  • Gout: Allopurinol is used to prevent gout attacks by lowering uric acid levels in the blood, thus reducing the formation of urate crystals in the joints.

  • Hyperuricemia: It is used in patients with high levels of uric acid, which may occur due to conditions such as chronic kidney disease, leukemia, or chemotherapy.

  • Prevention of uric acid nephropathy: A condition that can occur due to excess uric acid in the urine, often following chemotherapy or radiation therapy.

  • Certain types of kidney stones: Allopurinol may help prevent the formation of uric acid kidney stones.

Dosage:

The dosage of Allopurinol (Urisol) 100mg Tablets is usually based on the patient's condition, response to treatment, and kidney function. The typical dosing schedule is as follows:

  • Gout:

    • Initial dose: 100 mg once daily. This may be increased based on response and uric acid levels.

    • Maintenance dose: Typically, 200 to 300 mg per day, which may be increased up to 800 mg per day depending on the severity of the condition. For severe cases, doses above 300 mg are often split into two doses daily.

  • Hyperuricemia associated with cancer or chemotherapy:

    • The starting dose is usually 200–400 mg per day, adjusted based on the patient's condition.

  • Kidney function adjustment: The dosage should be adjusted for patients with renal impairment. For patients with reduced kidney function, a lower starting dose is recommended (e.g., 100 mg/day).

Administration: Take Allopurinol tablets once a day, preferably after meals to reduce the risk of stomach irritation.

Note: Always follow your healthcare provider's recommendations regarding dosage and frequency.

Side Effects:

Common side effects of Allopurinol (Urisol) 100mg may include:

  • Gastrointestinal issues: nausea, vomiting, or abdominal discomfort.

  • Rash: A skin rash may occur, and it could indicate an allergic reaction, so it should be monitored.

  • Headache.

  • Drowsiness.

  • Dizziness.

Serious side effects (though rare) may include:

  • Severe allergic reactions (e.g., anaphylaxis): Symptoms may include difficulty breathing, swelling of the face, lips, or throat.

  • Severe rash or peeling skin, which may be a sign of a serious condition called Stevens-Johnson syndrome.

  • Liver toxicity: Symptoms might include yellowing of the skin or eyes (jaundice), dark urine, or unusual fatigue.

  • Kidney problems: Painful urination, blood in urine, or changes in urine output.

  • Blood disorders: such as low white blood cells or platelets, leading to increased susceptibility to infections or bleeding.

  • Allopurinol hypersensitivity syndrome: This is a rare but potentially fatal condition involving fever, rash, liver dysfunction, and kidney problems.

If you experience any severe side effects, seek immediate medical attention.

Contraindications:

Allopurinol (Urisol) 100mg Tablets should not be used in the following situations:

  • Hypersensitivity to Allopurinol or any component of the product.

  • Acute gout attack: Allopurinol should not be started during an acute gout attack as it may exacerbate the symptoms. It is usually started after the acute attack has resolved.

  • Severe liver or kidney dysfunction: Patients with severe renal or hepatic impairment should use Allopurinol with caution, and dose adjustments may be necessary.

  • Pregnancy and breastfeeding: Allopurinol should be used during pregnancy and breastfeeding only if clearly needed, under medical supervision. There is limited data on the safety of Allopurinol during pregnancy.

  • History of allergic reactions: Patients with a history of serious allergic reactions to Allopurinol (e.g., rashes, skin reactions) should avoid taking it.

Precautions:

  • Renal impairment: Allopurinol dosage should be adjusted in patients with kidney disease to avoid accumulation of the drug in the body. Patients with mild renal impairment may need a reduced dose.

  • Alcohol use: Excessive alcohol consumption can increase uric acid levels and may hinder the effectiveness of Allopurinol in controlling gout.

  • Dehydration: Ensure adequate fluid intake while on Allopurinol to reduce the risk of kidney stones.

Caution should be exercised in patients with:

  • History of gastrointestinal ulcers or gastritis, as Allopurinol may cause stomach irritation in some people.

  • Heart disease: Ensure your doctor is aware of any heart conditions before starting Allopurinol.
