Product Description:

Amoxicillin (Axmel) 250mg Capsule is a broad-spectrum antibiotic belonging to the penicillin class. It is used to treat a variety of bacterial infections by inhibiting the growth of bacteria. Each capsule contains 250mg of amoxicillin, and the product typically comes in a pack of 100 capsules. Amoxicillin works by disrupting the synthesis of bacterial cell walls, leading to bacterial death.

This medication is often prescribed to treat respiratory infections, urinary tract infections, skin infections, and other bacterial conditions.

Indications:

Amoxicillin (Axmel) 250mg Capsule is used to treat a wide range of bacterial infections, including:

  1. Respiratory tract infections:

    • Pneumonia

    • Bronchitis

    • Sinusitis

    • Pharyngitis (sore throat)

    • Tonsillitis

  2. Urinary tract infections (UTIs):

    • Cystitis

    • Pyelonephritis (kidney infection)

  3. Skin and soft tissue infections:

    • Cellulitis

    • Impetigo

    • Abscesses

  4. Ear infections:

    • Otitis media (middle ear infection)

  5. Gastrointestinal infections:

    • Helicobacter pylori eradication (used in combination with other antibiotics for peptic ulcer disease)

  6. Other infections:

    • Endocarditis prophylaxis (in patients at risk of infective endocarditis)

    • Lyme disease (early stages)

    • Dental infections

Dosage and Administration:

Amoxicillin (Axmel) is typically dosed based on the infection being treated, the patient's age, and any underlying conditions. The following is a general dosing guide:

  1. Adults:

    • Mild to moderate infections: 250mg to 500mg every 8 hours.

    • Severe infections: 500mg to 1g every 8 hours.

    • For Helicobacter pylori eradication: Amoxicillin is used in combination with other drugs (e.g., clarithromycin and proton pump inhibitors), usually at a dose of 1g twice daily for 14 days.

  2. Children:

    • For mild to moderate infections: Doses are typically calculated based on body weight, usually around 20-40 mg/kg/day, divided into 3 doses.

    • For otitis media or respiratory infections: 250mg every 8 hours, or as prescribed by the pediatrician.

Administration:

  • Take the capsules orally, with or without food.

  • Swallow the capsules whole with a full glass of water.

  • If you miss a dose, take it as soon as you remember unless it's almost time for your next dose. Do not take two doses at the same time to make up for a missed dose.

Note: Complete the entire prescribed course, even if you start feeling better before finishing the medication, to prevent bacterial resistance.

Side Effects:

Common side effects of Amoxicillin (Axmel) include:

  1. Gastrointestinal:

    • Nausea

    • Diarrhea

    • Vomiting

    • Abdominal pain or discomfort

  2. Allergic reactions:

    • Rash (skin rash)

    • Itching

    • Swelling (especially of the face or throat)

    • Anaphylaxis (rare but serious allergic reaction)

  3. Central nervous system:

    • Headache

    • Dizziness

  4. Other side effects:

    • Fever

    • Fatigue

Serious Side Effects:

  • Severe allergic reactions: Symptoms may include severe rash, difficulty breathing, and swelling of the face, lips, or throat.

  • Liver problems: Yellowing of the skin or eyes (jaundice), dark urine, and unusual fatigue.

  • Clostridium difficile-associated diarrhea: Severe, persistent diarrhea that may be associated with abdominal cramping.

  • Blood disorders: Unusual bruising or bleeding, anemia (low red blood cell count), or thrombocytopenia (low platelet count).

  • Severe skin reactions: Rash, blisters, or peeling skin.

Contraindications:

Amoxicillin (Axmel) should be avoided or used with caution in the following conditions:

  1. Hypersensitivity:

    • Known allergy to amoxicillin or other penicillin antibiotics (e.g., ampicillin).

    • History of severe allergic reactions (e.g., anaphylaxis, hives, swelling) to penicillins or cephalosporins.

  2. Mononucleosis (Infectious mononucleosis):

    • Amoxicillin can cause a rash in patients with mono, which may be misinterpreted as an allergic reaction.

  3. Renal impairment:

    • Patients with kidney disease (e.g., severe renal impairment) may require dose adjustments.

  4. Pregnancy:

    • Amoxicillin is classified as Category B in pregnancy, meaning it is generally considered safe for use during pregnancy. However, it should only be used if clearly needed and prescribed by a healthcare provider.

  5. Breastfeeding:

    • Amoxicillin is excreted in breast milk in small amounts. It is considered safe for use while breastfeeding, but a healthcare provider should be consulted before use.

Precautions:

  1. History of Allergic Reactions:

    • Penicillin-allergic patients: Amoxicillin should be used with caution in patients who have a history of penicillin allergy or hypersensitivity reactions to beta-lactam antibiotics.

  2. Diarrhea:

    • Antibiotic-associated diarrhea (including C. difficile-associated diarrhea) may occur. If you experience severe diarrhea or abdominal cramping, consult your doctor immediately.

  3. Renal function:

    • If you have renal impairment, dose adjustments may be necessary. Amoxicillin should be used with caution in patients with kidney disease or renal dysfunction.

  4. Drug Interactions:

    • Probenecid: Can increase amoxicillin blood levels by decreasing renal excretion.

    • Oral contraceptives: There have been reports that antibiotics, including amoxicillin, can reduce the effectiveness of oral contraceptives. An additional contraceptive method may be advised during treatment.

Summary:

Amoxicillin (Axmel) 250mg Capsule is a penicillin antibiotic used to treat a wide variety of bacterial infections, including respiratory, urinary, and skin infections, as well as certain gastrointestinal and sexually transmitted infections. It is typically dosed as 250mg to 500mg every 8 hours, depending on the severity of the infection. Side effects can include gastrointestinal issues, allergic reactions, and, rarely, serious skin or liver reactions. The medication should be avoided in patients with a known allergy to penicillins, and it should be used with caution in patients with renal impairment. Always follow your healthcare provider's instructions and complete the entire prescribed course of treatment.
