100mg/ml Powder for Suspension (Oral Drops)

ANTIBACTERIAL

Here is the detailed information for Amoxicillin (Moxylor) 100mg/ml Powder for Suspension (Oral Drops) 10ml:

Product Description:

Amoxicillin (Moxylor) is a broad-spectrum antibiotic from the penicillin class of drugs. It is commonly used to treat a variety of bacterial infections by inhibiting the synthesis of the bacterial cell wall, leading to the destruction of the bacteria. The 100mg/ml oral suspension is intended for use in pediatric patients and those who may have difficulty swallowing tablets.

The powder for suspension form needs to be reconstituted with water before use, creating a suspension of 100mg of Amoxicillin per ml. The oral drops provide an easy-to-administer format for children, with dosing usually based on the child’s weight or the severity of the infection.

Indications:

Amoxicillin (Moxylor) is used for the treatment of various bacterial infections, including:

  1. Respiratory Infections:

    • Otitis media (middle ear infections)

    • Sinusitis

    • Pneumonia

    • Bronchitis (acute bacterial)

  2. Urinary Tract Infections (UTIs):

    • Infections of the bladder, kidneys, or urethra.

  3. Gastrointestinal Infections:

    • Helicobacter pylori eradication (in combination with other medications).

  4. Skin and Soft Tissue Infections:

    • For infections like cellulitis or abscesses.

  5. Dental Infections:

    • Used to treat infections related to dental abscesses or periodontal disease.

  6. Other Infections:

    • It is also used for treating gonorrhea, salmonella, and some strep throat infections.

Dosage and Administration:

The dosage of Amoxicillin (Moxylor) depends on the age, weight, and severity of the infection. It is important to follow the healthcare provider’s instructions precisely for the correct dosing.

For Infants and Children (under 12 years):

  • General Dosage: Typically, 20-40 mg/kg/day divided into 2 or 3 doses per day.

    For example:

    • For mild to moderate infections: 20mg/kg/day, divided into 2-3 doses.

    • For severe infections: 40mg/kg/day, divided into 2-3 doses.

This can be adjusted based on the infection's severity and the child’s individual response.

For Adults:

  • Usual dose: 250mg to 500mg every 8 hours.

  • For severe infections, a higher dose may be required, typically 750mg to 1g every 8 hours.

Note: The suspension needs to be shaken well before each use. Dosing is usually based on the weight of the patient, and the oral dropper or measuring device provided should be used for accurate administration.

Side Effects:

Although Amoxicillin (Moxylor) is generally well tolerated, some patients may experience side effects, which can vary in severity:

Common Side Effects:

  • Gastrointestinal Issues:

    • Nausea, vomiting, diarrhea, or abdominal pain.

    • The drug may cause mild gastric irritation or upset stomach.

  • Allergic Reactions:

    • Rashes, hives, or itching.

Less Common Side Effects:

  • Candidiasis (oral or vaginal thrush), as antibiotics can disturb the natural balance of bacteria.

  • Headache or dizziness.

Serious Side Effects (rare but require immediate medical attention):

  • Severe Allergic Reactions (Anaphylaxis): Symptoms include swelling of the face, difficulty breathing, tightness in the chest, or a rash that may spread. Immediate medical attention is required.

  • Clostridium difficile-associated diarrhea: Severe diarrhea that may occur during or after antibiotic treatment and could be a sign of a dangerous bacterial infection in the intestines.

  • Liver damage: Symptoms of liver problems can include jaundice (yellowing of the skin or eyes), dark urine, or persistent stomach pain.

  • Blood Disorders: Rare cases of low white blood cells (leukopenia) or platelet count (thrombocytopenia), leading to increased risk of infections or bleeding.

  • Severe Skin Reactions: Such as Stevens-Johnson syndrome or toxic epidermal necrolysis (TENS), which are rare but serious skin conditions that cause blisters and peeling.

Contraindications:

Amoxicillin (Moxylor) should not be used in the following situations:

  1. Hypersensitivity to Penicillins:

    • If the patient is allergic to penicillin or any other components of the formulation (such as amoxicillin), the drug should be avoided.

  2. Previous History of Severe Allergic Reactions to Beta-lactams:

    • If the patient has had a previous anaphylactic reaction or severe allergic reaction to any penicillin-type or cephalosporin antibiotics, Amoxicillin should not be used.

  3. Infectious Mononucleosis:

    • Amoxicillin should not be used to treat patients with infectious mononucleosis (commonly known as glandular fever) due to the increased risk of a rash.

  4. Severe Renal Impairment:

    • Amoxicillin is excreted by the kidneys, so caution should be exercised or an adjusted dose may be required in patients with severe kidney impairment.

Precautions:

  1. Gastrointestinal Diseases:

    • Amoxicillin should be used with caution in patients with gastrointestinal disorders, such as colitis, as it can cause severe diarrhea due to Clostridium difficile infection.

  2. Renal Impairment:

    • Dose adjustments may be necessary for patients with renal (kidney) impairment, as the drug is eliminated through the kidneys.

  3. Pregnancy and Breastfeeding:

    • Pregnancy: Amoxicillin is generally considered safe to use during pregnancy, especially in the second and third trimesters, but should only be used when clearly necessary and prescribed by a healthcare provider.

    • Breastfeeding: Amoxicillin is excreted in breast milk but in small amounts that are generally considered safe for breastfeeding infants. However, if any unusual symptoms develop in the infant, the doctor should be consulted.

  4. Overuse and Resistance:

    • As with all antibiotics, overuse or incorrect use of Amoxicillin can lead to the development of antibiotic-resistant bacteria. Always complete the full prescribed course of treatment, even if symptoms improve before finishing the medication.

  5. Superinfections:

    • Amoxicillin may disrupt the balance of bacteria in the body, potentially leading to superinfections. If signs of a secondary infection such as a fungal infection or unusual symptoms appear, consult a doctor.

Summary:

Amoxicillin (Moxylor) is a broad-spectrum antibiotic used to treat various bacterial infections, including respiratory infections, urinary tract infections, and skin infections. It is available in an oral suspension form of 100mg/ml (oral drops), making it easier to administer, especially in children or individuals with difficulty swallowing tablets.

  • Indications: Respiratory infections, urinary tract infections, skin infections, dental infections, and more.

  • Dosage: Dosing is based on weight and severity of infection. Children generally receive 20-40 mg/kg/day, divided into 2-3 doses.

  • Side Effects: Include gastrointestinal upset, rash, and in rare cases, severe allergic reactions, liver damage, or Clostridium difficile diarrhea.

  • Contraindications: Avoid in patients allergic to penicillin, those with infectious mononucleosis, or those with severe renal impairment.

As with all antibiotics, Amoxicillin (Moxylor) should be used exactly as prescribed to avoid antibiotic resistance. Always consult with a healthcare provider before starting or discontinuing any medication.
