Product Description:

Atorvastatin (Atorsaph 10) 10mg Film Coated Tablet is a prescription medication that belongs to the class of statins (HMG-CoA reductase inhibitors). It is primarily used to lower cholesterol levels and to reduce the risk of cardiovascular diseases such as heart attacks, strokes, and other heart-related complications. Atorvastatin works by inhibiting the enzyme HMG-CoA reductase, which is responsible for producing cholesterol in the liver. By lowering low-density lipoprotein (LDL) cholesterol (the "bad" cholesterol) and increasing high-density lipoprotein (HDL) cholesterol (the "good" cholesterol), atorvastatin helps prevent the buildup of plaque in the arteries, thereby reducing the risk of atherosclerosis and cardiovascular events.

This 10mg tablet is film-coated, which makes it easier to swallow and can be taken once daily, either with or without food.

Indications:

Atorvastatin (Atorsaph 10) 10mg Film Coated Tablet is indicated for:

  1. Hyperlipidemia:

    • Primary hypercholesterolemia (elevated LDL cholesterol) in adults and children aged 10 years and older.

    • Mixed dyslipidemia, which includes elevated LDL cholesterol, triglycerides, and low HDL cholesterol.

  2. Prevention of cardiovascular events:

    • To reduce the risk of cardiovascular events (such as heart attack, stroke, and the need for revascularization procedures) in patients with existing cardiovascular disease (secondary prevention).

    • To reduce the risk of cardiovascular disease in high-risk individuals (those with risk factors such as hypertension, smoking, diabetes, or a family history of heart disease).

  3. Familial hypercholesterolemia:

    • To treat heterozygous familial hypercholesterolemia, a genetic disorder that causes high cholesterol levels.

  4. Prevention of atherosclerosis:

    • To slow or prevent the progression of atherosclerosis in individuals at high risk of developing cardiovascular disease.

Dosage and Administration:

General Dosage:

  • The typical starting dose for Atorvastatin (Atorsaph 10mg) is 10mg once daily.

  • Depending on the patient’s cholesterol levels and response to treatment, the dose may be adjusted. The usual range for atorvastatin is 10mg to 80mg once daily.

  • The dose can be adjusted at 4-week intervals, and the maximum dose is 80mg once daily.

Administration:

  • Atorvastatin (Atorsaph 10mg) should be taken once daily, either in the morning or evening.

  • The tablet can be taken with or without food.

  • The tablet should be swallowed whole with a glass of water.

Children:

  • For children aged 10-17 years with heterozygous familial hypercholesterolemia, the typical starting dose is 10mg once daily, with the dose being adjusted based on individual cholesterol levels.

Side Effects:

While most people tolerate atorvastatin well, some may experience side effects. Common side effects of Atorvastatin (Atorsaph 10mg) include:

  1. Gastrointestinal issues:

    • Constipation

    • Diarrhea

    • Indigestion (dyspepsia)

    • Abdominal pain

    • Flatulence (gas)

  2. Musculoskeletal problems:

    • Muscle pain (myalgia)

    • Muscle weakness

    • Cramps

  3. Central Nervous System:

    • Headache

    • Dizziness

    • Insomnia

  4. Skin:

    • Rash

    • Itching

  5. Liver-related:

    • Elevated liver enzymes (ALT, AST), which are usually detected in routine blood tests.

  6. Other:

    • Fatigue

    • Nausea

    • Elevated blood sugar levels (especially in patients with diabetes or those at risk of developing diabetes)

Serious Side Effects:

  • Rhabdomyolysis: A rare but serious condition involving muscle breakdown that can lead to kidney damage. Symptoms include severe muscle pain, tenderness, or weakness, especially in the legs.

  • Liver damage: Symptoms include yellowing of the skin or eyes (jaundice), dark urine, or upper abdominal pain.

  • Kidney problems: In rare cases, rhabdomyolysis can lead to kidney damage.

  • Severe allergic reactions: Such as swelling of the face, lips, tongue, or throat, which may cause difficulty breathing (anaphylaxis).

Contraindications:

Atorvastatin (Atorsaph 10mg) is contraindicated in the following conditions:

  1. Hypersensitivity:

    • Allergic reactions to atorvastatin or any of the tablet's ingredients.

  2. Liver disease:

    • Active liver disease (e.g., hepatitis, cirrhosis) or unexplained persistent elevations in liver enzymes (AST/ALT).

    • Patients with a history of liver disease should be monitored closely if atorvastatin is prescribed.

  3. Pregnancy:

    • Atorvastatin is contraindicated during pregnancy (Category X). Statins can harm the fetus and cause birth defects. It should be discontinued immediately if pregnancy occurs during treatment.

  4. Breastfeeding:

    • Atorvastatin is contraindicated during breastfeeding as it is excreted in breast milk and can be harmful to a nursing infant.

  5. Muscle disorders:

    • Patients with a history of muscle disorders (e.g., myopathy or rhabdomyolysis) should avoid atorvastatin, as it can worsen these conditions.

    • If muscle pain or weakness occurs during treatment, atorvastatin should be discontinued.

  6. Severe kidney impairment:

    • Caution should be exercised when prescribing atorvastatin in individuals with severe kidney problems, as the medication can increase the risk of side effects, including muscle-related issues.

Precautions:

  • Liver function: Regular monitoring of liver function is recommended, especially in patients with pre-existing liver conditions or those who develop symptoms of liver problems.

  • Muscle symptoms: Patients should be advised to report any unexplained muscle pain, tenderness, or weakness immediately.

  • Diabetes: Atorvastatin may cause a slight increase in blood glucose levels. Diabetic patients or those at risk for diabetes should be monitored regularly.

  • Alcohol use: Excessive alcohol consumption can increase the risk of liver toxicity when taking atorvastatin.

Drug Interactions:

Atorvastatin can interact with other medications, and some of these interactions may increase the risk of serious side effects, including muscle-related issues. Common interactions include:

  1. CYP3A4 inhibitors (e.g., clarithromycin, ketoconazole, ritonavir, grapefruit juice) may increase atorvastatin levels and the risk of muscle side effects.

  2. Gemfibrozil and other fibrates: Co-administration may increase the risk of myopathy and rhabdomyolysis.

  3. Warfarin: Atorvastatin can increase the effects of warfarin, so regular monitoring of the INR (International Normalized Ratio) is recommended.

  4. Cyclosporine: The combination of atorvastatin with cyclosporine may increase atorvastatin blood levels and risk of side effects.

  5. Other medications: Always inform your healthcare provider about all other medications you are taking, including over-the-counter drugs and supplements.

Summary:

Atorvastatin (Atorsaph 10mg Film Coated Tablet is an effective statin used to lower cholesterol and reduce the risk of cardiovascular events such as heart attacks and strokes.
