ANTIBACTERIAL (PENICILLINS)

Co Amoxiclav (Co Amoxisaph 125) 125mg/31.25mg per 5ml Powder for Oral Suspension 60ml

Product Description:

Co Amoxiclav (Co Amoxisaph 125) is a combination antibiotic formulation that contains amoxicillin and clavulanic acid. It is available as a powder for oral suspension. This combination is designed to combat a broad range of bacterial infections by harnessing the combined effects of amoxicillin (a penicillin-class antibiotic) and clavulanic acid (a beta-lactamase inhibitor). Clavulanic acid helps to inhibit bacterial enzymes that may otherwise destroy amoxicillin, thereby enhancing its effectiveness against beta-lactamase-producing bacteria.

Each 5ml dose of the suspension contains:

  • 125mg Amoxicillin

  • 31.25mg Clavulanic Acid

The suspension is presented in a 60ml bottle for easy oral administration.

  7. Dental Infections:

    • Dental abscesses

Dosages:

The dosage of Co Amoxiclav (Co Amoxisaph 125) depends on the patient's age, weight, and the severity of the infection. It is generally administered 2 to 3 times daily.

  • Adults and Children over 12 years:

    • Typical Dose: 5ml of suspension (125mg amoxicillin / 31.25mg clavulanic acid), three times a day.

    • For more severe infections, the dosage may be increased according to the doctor's recommendation.

  • Children (6 months to 12 years):

    • The dose is based on body weight. The typical dose is between 20-40mg/kg/day divided into two or three doses.

    • Example: For a 30kg child, a dose of 10-20ml of the suspension daily, divided into two or three doses.

  • Infants (under 6 months):

    • Use with caution and only under the supervision of a healthcare professional.

  • Renal Impairment:

    • In patients with renal impairment, the dosage may need to be adjusted. The prescribing physician will determine the appropriate dose.

How to Prepare the Suspension:

  1. Add water to the bottle as per the instructions on the label (usually around 42ml of water).

  2. Shake well to ensure that the powder dissolves properly and the suspension is homogeneous.

  3. Store the suspension in a cool, dry place, and shake well before each use.

Side Effects:

Co Amoxiclav (Co Amoxisaph 125) is generally well tolerated, but like all medications, it may cause side effects, which include:

  1. Common Side Effects:

    • Gastrointestinal symptoms: Nausea, vomiting, diarrhea, or upset stomach.

    • Rash or mild skin reactions.

  2. Less Common/Serious Side Effects:

    • Allergic reactions: Severe allergic reactions including hives, swelling of the face or throat, and difficulty breathing. This may indicate an anaphylactic reaction, which requires immediate medical attention.

    • Liver problems: Symptoms of liver damage can include yellowing of the skin or eyes (jaundice), dark urine, or unexplained fatigue.

    • Severe diarrhea (Clostridium difficile-associated diarrhea): Often due to antibiotic-associated colitis.

    • Blood-related problems: Rare cases of anemia, leukopenia, or thrombocytopenia (low platelet count).

    • Kidney problems: Symptoms include swelling, reduced urine output, or discomfort in the kidney region.

  3. Other Possible Side Effects:

    • Headache

    • Dizziness

    • Vaginal infections (yeast infections)

Contraindications:

Co Amoxiclav (Co Amoxisaph 125) should not be used in the following cases:

  1. Hypersensitivity to amoxicillin, clavulanic acid, or any component of the product.

  2. Penicillin Allergy: Patients with a known history of severe allergic reactions (e.g., anaphylaxis) to penicillins or cephalosporins.

  3. Severe Liver Impairment: Patients with a history of cholestatic jaundice or other severe liver issues related to previous amoxicillin/clavulanate use.

  4. History of Clavulanate-related Hepatitis: If the patient has previously experienced liver issues due to clavulanic acid or amoxicillin, the drug should be avoided.

  5. Renal Failure: In patients with severe renal failure, dosage adjustments may be required, or the drug may be contraindicated.

  6. Infants Under 6 Weeks: Amoxiclav should be used with caution in infants under 6 weeks, as the liver of such infants is still developing and may not metabolize the medication effectively.

Precautions:

  1. Caution in Patients with Liver or Kidney Disease: Amoxiclav should be used cautiously in patients with a history of liver or kidney disease, as these conditions can lead to an increased risk of side effects.

  2. Prolonged Use: Long-term use may result in superinfection with non-susceptible organisms, such as fungi or Clostridium difficile, which can cause colitis.

  3. Pregnancy: Co Amoxiclav should only be used during pregnancy if clearly needed and prescribed by a healthcare provider. The benefits must outweigh any potential risks.

  4. Breastfeeding: Small amounts of amoxicillin and clavulanic acid can be excreted in breast milk. Consult with a healthcare provider before using the medication while breastfeeding.

Overdose:

In the case of overdose, seek immediate medical attention. Overdose symptoms may include:

  • Severe nausea, vomiting, or diarrhea.

  • Kidney dysfunction.

  • Severe gastrointestinal distress.

Treatment for overdose may include supportive care, hydration, and monitoring of kidney function.

Conclusion:

Co Amoxiclav (Co Amoxisaph 125) is an effective and commonly used antibiotic suspension for the treatment of a wide variety of bacterial infections. With a combination of amoxicillin and clavulanic acid, it provides broad-spectrum action against many bacterial pathogens. As with all antibiotics, it is important to complete the full course of treatment as prescribed, even if symptoms improve, to avoid the development of antibiotic-resistant bacteria. Always follow your healthcare provider's instructions regarding dosage and potential side effects.
