Product Description:

Metoclopramide Hydrochloride (Meto) 10mg antiemetic tablets are used primarily to treat nausea and vomiting. Metoclopramide is a dopamine antagonist that works by promoting the movement of food through the stomach and intestines. This medication increases the motility of the upper gastrointestinal tract without increasing gastric secretions. It is effective in the treatment of nausea and vomiting caused by various conditions, including chemotherapy, surgery, or other gastrointestinal disorders.

Each tablet of Meto contains 10mg of Metoclopramide Hydrochloride, and it is typically used for short-term treatment under medical supervision.

Indications:

Metoclopramide Hydrochloride (Meto) 10mg tablets are indicated for the following conditions:

  1. Nausea and Vomiting:

    • Meto is commonly used to treat nausea and vomiting caused by chemotherapy, radiation therapy, and postoperative conditions.

  2. Gastroesophageal Reflux Disease (GERD):

    • It is used to treat gastroesophageal reflux disease (GERD) and to help improve gastric emptying. By increasing the motility of the stomach, Meto can reduce symptoms like heartburn and regurgitation associated with GERD.

  3. Gastroparesis:

    • Meto is used to treat diabetic gastroparesis, a condition where the stomach takes too long to empty its contents, causing nausea, vomiting, and bloating.

  4. Postoperative Nausea and Vomiting:

    • It is used to prevent and treat nausea and vomiting following surgery or anesthesia.

Dosage:

The typical dosage for Metoclopramide Hydrochloride (Meto) 10mg tablets depends on the condition being treated. Below are the usual dosages:

For Nausea and Vomiting (Adults):

  • The recommended dose is 10mg to 15mg taken 3 to 4 times daily before meals and at bedtime.

  • Maximum dose: 60mg/day (for short-term use only).

For Gastroesophageal Reflux Disease (GERD):

  • 10mg to 15mg taken 3 to 4 times a day before meals.

For Diabetic Gastroparesis:

  • 10mg taken 3 to 4 times daily.

For Postoperative Nausea and Vomiting:

  • The dose is typically 10mg given 30 minutes before surgery or anesthesia, with additional doses postoperatively if necessary.

Note: Dosage may vary depending on the severity of symptoms and individual response. Always follow your healthcare provider’s instructions.

Side Effects:

Metoclopramide Hydrochloride (Meto) 10mg tablets are generally well tolerated, but like any medication, it may cause side effects. The most common side effects include:

Common Side Effects:

  • Drowsiness or fatigue.

  • Headache.

  • Diarrhea or constipation.

  • Dizziness or lightheadedness.

Serious Side Effects:

  • Extrapyramidal Symptoms (EPS): These include involuntary muscle movements such as tremors, muscle rigidity, and restlessness. These symptoms may be more common with higher doses or prolonged use.

  • Tardive Dyskinesia: A serious condition involving involuntary movements, usually in the face, tongue, or limbs. This can be irreversible, especially with prolonged use.

  • Neuroleptic Malignant Syndrome (NMS): This is a rare, life-threatening condition characterized by fever, muscle stiffness, altered mental status, and autonomic dysfunction. Immediate medical attention is required if NMS is suspected.

  • Severe allergic reactions: Symptoms like swelling of the face, lips, or throat, difficulty breathing, or a severe rash should be reported immediately.

Rare Side Effects:

  • Depression or other mood changes.

  • Visual disturbances such as blurred vision.

  • Liver enzyme abnormalities: Rare, but possible liver function changes.

Contraindications:

Metoclopramide Hydrochloride (Meto) 10mg tablets should be avoided or used with caution in the following conditions:

  1. Hypersensitivity:

    • Contraindicated in patients who have a known hypersensitivity (allergic reaction) to Metoclopramide or any of its components.

  2. Gastrointestinal Obstruction:

    • Meto should not be used in patients with a mechanical obstruction, perforation, or gastric hemorrhage, as increasing gastrointestinal motility may worsen these conditions.

  3. Pheochromocytoma:

    • It is contraindicated in patients with pheochromocytoma (a rare tumor of the adrenal glands), as Metoclopramide may increase the release of catecholamines, potentially leading to a hypertensive crisis.

  4. History of Seizures:

    • Caution is needed in patients with a history of seizures, as Metoclopramide may lower the seizure threshold and increase the risk of seizures.

  5. Parkinson’s Disease:

    • Meto is contraindicated in patients with Parkinson's disease or other conditions involving dopamine dysfunction, as it can exacerbate motor symptoms.

  6. Tardive Dyskinesia:

    • Use of Metoclopramide is contraindicated in patients with a history of tardive dyskinesia or other movement disorders induced by dopamine antagonists.

  7. Pregnancy and Breastfeeding:

    • Meto should be used during pregnancy only if the potential benefits justify the risks to the fetus. It passes into breast milk, and caution is advised when used during breastfeeding, especially in infants under 1 month of age.

Precautions:

  • Short-term Use: Metoclopramide should be used for the shortest duration possible to minimize the risk of serious side effects like tardive dyskinesia and extrapyramidal symptoms.

  • CNS Effects: It can cause drowsiness or dizziness. Patients should be cautioned about engaging in activities requiring full alertness, such as driving or operating heavy machinery.

  • Liver and Kidney Function: Caution should be exercised in patients with impaired liver or kidney function, as the drug is metabolized by the liver and excreted by the kidneys.

  • Electrolyte Imbalance: Use with caution in patients with electrolyte imbalances, particularly those with low potassium or magnesium levels, as this may increase the risk of extrapyramidal side effects.

Conclusion:

Metoclopramide Hydrochloride (Meto) 10mg tablets are effective for managing nausea, vomiting, and certain gastrointestinal conditions. While generally well-tolerated, it is important to monitor for potential side effects, especially with long-term use. Patients should follow the prescribed dosage and be aware of contraindications, especially those involving movement disorders, gastrointestinal obstructions, and hypersensitivity. Always consult a healthcare provider for any concerns or side effects.
