Here is the detailed information for Montelukast (Bronast) 5mg Leukotriene Receptor Antagonist Chewable Tablet 14's:

Product Description:

Montelukast (Bronast 5mg) is a leukotriene receptor antagonist that is used to treat asthma and allergic rhinitis. It works by blocking leukotrienes, chemicals in the body that cause inflammation and narrowing of the airways. By blocking these chemicals, Montelukast helps to prevent asthma attacks, manage symptoms of asthma, and reduce symptoms of allergies such as a runny nose and sneezing.

Each chewable tablet of Montelukast (Bronast) contains 5mg of the active ingredient Montelukast. The package contains 14 chewable tablets, making it convenient for children and adults who have difficulty swallowing regular tablets. Montelukast is used as part of the long-term management of asthma and can also be used for seasonal allergies (hay fever).

Indications:

Montelukast (Bronast) is indicated for:

  1. Asthma (in children and adults):

    • Prevention and long-term management of asthma. Montelukast helps reduce asthma symptoms and prevent asthma attacks when used regularly.

    • It is used as a complementary treatment alongside other asthma medications such as inhaled corticosteroids or bronchodilators.

  2. Seasonal Allergic Rhinitis (Hay Fever):

    • Management of allergic rhinitis symptoms such as nasal congestion, sneezing, runny nose, and itchy or watery eyes due to pollen or other allergens.

  3. Exercise-Induced Bronchoconstriction:

    • Prevention of exercise-induced bronchoconstriction (narrowing of the airways due to physical activity) in individuals with asthma.

Dosage:

The dosage of Montelukast (Bronast) is generally as follows:

For Asthma:

  • Adults and adolescents (≥15 years):

    • 10 mg once daily in the evening.

  • Children (6 to 14 years):

    • 5 mg once daily in the evening.

  • Children (2 to 5 years):

    • 4 mg once daily in the evening.

For Seasonal Allergic Rhinitis:

  • Adults and adolescents (≥15 years):

    • 10 mg once daily in the evening.

  • Children (6 to 14 years):

    • 5 mg once daily in the evening.

  • Children (2 to 5 years):

    • 4 mg once daily in the evening.

For Exercise-Induced Bronchoconstriction:

  • Adults and adolescents (≥15 years):

    • 10 mg at least 2 hours before exercise, taken once daily.

  • Children (6 to 14 years):

    • 5 mg at least 2 hours before exercise.

Note: The dosage should not exceed the recommended dose for each age group. Montelukast should be taken at the same time every day to help with consistency in managing symptoms.

Side Effects:

Like all medications, Montelukast (Bronast) may cause side effects. Common side effects include:

Common Side Effects:

  1. Headache.

  2. Stomach pain.

  3. Diarrhea.

  4. Nausea.

  5. Cough.

  6. Throat irritation.

Less Common or Serious Side Effects:

  1. Behavioral changes such as agitation, irritability, sleep disturbances, or vivid dreams.

  2. Allergic reactions (e.g., skin rash, swelling of the face, lips, tongue, or throat, which can lead to difficulty breathing).

  3. Severe abdominal pain.

  4. Mood changes including depression, anxiety, or suicidal thoughts (rare, but important to monitor).

  5. Liver problems such as yellowing of the skin or eyes (jaundice).

  6. Numbness or tingling in the extremities.

If any of these side effects occur, seek medical attention promptly.

Contraindications:

Montelukast (Bronast) should be used with caution or avoided in the following situations:

  1. Hypersensitivity to Montelukast or any of its components:

    • If you have a known allergy to Montelukast, you should not take this medication.

  2. Acute Asthma Attacks:

    • Montelukast is not suitable for the acute treatment of asthma attacks. It should be used as part of a long-term asthma management plan, not for immediate relief during an asthma attack. Rescue medications such as short-acting bronchodilators should be used for asthma attacks.

  3. Severe Hepatic Impairment:

    • Montelukast should be used with caution in patients with severe liver disease or hepatic impairment, as the drug is metabolized in the liver.

  4. Pregnancy (Category C):

    • Montelukast should only be used during pregnancy if clearly needed. It should be prescribed by a healthcare provider who will assess the benefits and risks.

  5. Breastfeeding:

    • It is unknown whether Montelukast is excreted in breast milk. Consult your healthcare provider before using Montelukast if you are breastfeeding.

  6. Children under 2 years:

    • Montelukast is not recommended for use in children under the age of 2 years.

Precautions:

  1. Mental Health Monitoring:

    • As Montelukast has been associated with mood changes, including anxiety, depression, and thoughts of self-harm, it is important to monitor any behavioral or mood changes, especially in children and adolescents.

  2. Not a Rescue Medication:

    • Montelukast is not for the immediate relief of asthma attacks or acute exacerbations. It is for long-term management. Always have a fast-acting bronchodilator (rescue inhaler) available.

  3. Liver Function:

    • Regular liver function tests may be necessary in patients with a history of liver problems or those using Montelukast for long periods.

  4. Potential Drug Interactions:

    • Montelukast may interact with certain medications, including phenytoin, rifampicin, or phenobarbital, which can decrease the effectiveness of Montelukast.

  5. Monitor for Allergic Reactions:

    • Severe allergic reactions, such as anaphylaxis, although rare, may occur. If symptoms like swelling of the face, lips, tongue, or difficulty breathing occur, immediate medical attention is necessary.

Summary:

Montelukast (Bronast 5mg) is a leukotriene receptor antagonist used in the long-term management of asthma, seasonal allergic rhinitis, and exercise-induced bronchoconstriction. The usual dose is 5 mg once daily, and it is taken in the evening for optimal effect.

Common side effects include headache, stomach pain, and cough, while more serious side effects may include behavioral changes, liver problems, and allergic reactions. Montelukast is contraindicated in those with hypersensitivity to the drug, acute asthma attacks, and severe liver disease.

It is essential to follow the prescribed dosage regimen and not use Montelukast as a rescue medication for sudden asthma attacks. Always consult with a healthcare provider before starting or discontinuing any medication.

Please consult your doctor or healthcare provider before using Montelukast (Bronast) to ensure it is appropriate for your condition.
