Indication/Uses: 

1. Staphylococcal Infections

   • Usage: Oxacillin is primarily used to treat infections caused by penicillinase-producing Staphylococcus aureus, including methicillin-sensitive Staphylococcus aureus (MSSA). This includes skin and soft tissue infections, bacteremia, and endocarditis.

2. Respiratory Tract Infections

   • Usage: Effective in treating pneumonia and other respiratory tract infections caused by susceptible strains of bacteria.

3. Bone and Joint Infections

   • Usage: Used in the management of osteomyelitis and septic arthritis caused by staphylococcal infections.

4. Urinary Tract Infections

   • Usage: Employed in the treatment of UTIs caused by susceptible bacterial strains.

5. Meningitis

   • Usage: Can be used in cases of bacterial meningitis caused by susceptible organisms.

6. Septicemia

   • Usage: Effective in the treatment of septicemia (bloodstream infections) caused by susceptible bacteria.

Mechanism of Action

Oxacillin works by inhibiting the synthesis of bacterial cell walls. It binds to specific penicillin-binding proteins (PBPs) located inside the bacterial cell wall, inhibiting the final transpeptidation step of peptidoglycan synthesis. This leads to the weakening of the cell wall and eventually causes cell lysis and death of the bacteria.

Dosage and Administration

• Dosage: The dosage of oxacillin must be individualized based on the severity of the infection, the susceptibility of the causative organism, and the patient's renal function.
  • Adults: Commonly, 250-500 mg every 4-6 hours, administered either intramuscularly (IM) or intravenously (IV).
  • Children: Dosages are based on body weight and the severity of the infection, typically ranging from 50-100 mg/kg/day divided into equal doses every 4-6 hours.
• Administration:
  • For IM administration, reconstitute with sterile water for injection or bacteriostatic water.
  • For IV administration, reconstitute and further dilute with appropriate IV fluids as per guidelines.
